Jasmine had to say...I
Given the controversy over a little (usually) sticker, let me tell you this, you are ALLOWED and welcome to keep bookcrossing books (I do!). It might be hard to believe, but you can't take them with you to the great beyond and thus, they'll be travelling again. I know for a fact that my darling husband would probably trip over my still warm body, in his haste to get rid of my books. In fact I am hoping he'll release them at my funeral, I think of it as close to being inmortal, really! I get a fuzzy feeling thinking that 100 years from now, someone could be reading a literary gem of a review written by me, along the lines of "This book sucks". So even if you think Bookcrossing is the demon spawn from hell, please just remember that you won't be buried/cremated with your books. But at least a small part of you will be out there. FYI: I don't smoke, but I have to book loving pet birds. I really hate the need for this disclaimer but things have been getting ridiculous lately. FYI 1. My books are registered at bookcrossing 2. The cover shown might not match the book posted, I simply enter the ISBN #, and the cover that shows up stays, any complaints should be taken to the publisher. *Contrary to what some might believe, I don't put the wrong book cover up to annoy anyone. See, books have an ISBN # and R & R have asked for the correct number to be entered when we post a book and that is what I've done, so besides taking it up with the publishers, take it up with R&R also. 3. The books are used, meaning that quite a few of them will not be in pristine condition. USED defined as [adj] previously used or owned by another according to an online dictionary. 4. I don't smoke or use perfume but since most of my books are used (read #3 for definition), some might have an odor, but you won't need a gas mask. 5. Books might have creases (again read #3) 6. Some books might be old, They may even have some yellow pages but are in good condition. 7. I have a kid with asthma so feel your pain but since I cannot guarantee or know the history of the books in my posession, to be on the safe side I will be turning down requests with smell restrictions, unless I purchased the book myself. 8. I make mistakes, I know... surprising isn't it? and if I do, just bring it up to my attention and I'll do my best to fix it.
I expect the books I get from here to 1. Have a cover 2. Be readable 3. No unidentifiable fluids 4. Not be considered a biohazard You can also send me books with $100.00 bookmarks. You can also send chocolate with your books and no, chocolate stains don't count :-) Dear Valkyrie A fictional advice column for those in need of book advice, also an outlet for my Dear Abby delusion (since I am so much better than her). Feel free to send in your questions too. Dear Valkyrie I received a book and the book cover is different than the one shown on PBS. Is it part of a dastardly plot to keep me from enjoying the book? Will the contents of the book be different? Does the book sender hate me? Sincerely I.P. Freely
Dear I.P. Freely Publishers change book covers whenever the mood strikes them, surely you don’t expect your kind sender to break PBS rules by entering an incorrect ISBN number just to satisfy your obsessive compulsive need right? A different cover won’t keep you from enjoying a book to its fullest, in fact quite a few bibliophiles get a kick out of receiving books with international covers, there is the whole “neat” factor involved in a book that obviously traveled a long way before making it into your hands. And no the book sender doesn’t hate you so stop being so self-absorbed. Dear Valkyrie Some people disagree with me in the PBS forum; I think they don’t like me, why are they attacking me? Ben Dover Dear Ben It is possible to like someone and still disagree with his or her opinion. It benefits everyone to air different opinions and discuss them calmly, the same way you would discuss it with real life friends. Now if the person call you a name that would get your mouth washed with lye soap by mom and that person questioned the amount of working cells in your brain, that would be considered an attack and would reflect more on the person making it than on you. Defend yourself with dignity and rise above it. Dear Valkyrie I assumed I was going to received the 3rd Edition, 4th printing of a book… I thought I was going to get the 2nd Edition Timbuktu version. Should I PM the sender? Chris P. Bacon Dear Chris You do know what they say when you ASSume right?. If you want an specific book, it is your resposibily to let the sender know, the sender is not psychic Dear Valkyrie Someone wants an odor, pet, food free used book but I don't know where my books have been, what should I do? R.M. Pitt Unless you practice safe book reading habits, handle books with non-latex gloves only, know how many partners your book has been with and their book reading habits, any intimate stuff such as eating while reading etc… Be very careful not to send a book that might potentially harm someone, if the person really wants the book they'll remove their conditions absolving you of any culpability.
But...If you are 100% sure of your book’s chastity err purity, then you might safely be able to fulfill that person’s request. Disclaimer:
It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt." Mark Twain
